Profile
APTUM Architecture is a firm based in Switzerland which was founded in 2002 by Roger Hubeli and Julie Larsen and also offers Design Consulting Services in the USA. The firm is centered on the belief that an architecture practice must obtain the qualities that are most aptly described through the Latin term – APTUM – which is a way of achieving a resolute and ideal solution to a given problem. One has to search for the true expression to find a suitable and appropriate response to all projects.
Aptum actively pursues a diverse range of work, from residential to large scale buildings to interior architecture to urban design. We seize the challenges unique to each project, continually redefining the scope depending on site constraints, programmatic requirements, and the particular audience (client) for which the project is being designed.
Our approach is to search for inventive solutions that turn the very constraints of each project into a design trajectory, exploring overlaps between space, program, form, budget, sustainability, and materials.
We have been engaged with the current architectural discourse since starting the firm in 2002. We pursued our academic career in architecture at the University of Michigan’s Architecture Program and at the ETH Zurich Architecture Program under the chair of Marc Angélil. Currently, we are holding Assistant Professorships at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. Roger Hubeli is a member of the SIA (Association of Swiss Engineers and Architects).
While continuing to immerse ourselves in the contemporary discourse and the latest architectural practices, we call upon our network of innovative partners including artists, writers, designers, environmentalists, engineers and builders to shape each project. We engage these other fields as experts on design and we are interested in how design thinking can reciprocally inform other fields.
